The history of the school dates back to 1937. When the present school building was completed in 1972, the school was for the first time able to have all its different departments united at one location at Rud. Rud upper secondary school is today one of Akershus county's largest schools with 900 students and a staff of 220 employees.

The school courses are aimed at activity, especially in caring for other people, manual work, handling machines and tools, creating various products, shaping, painting, drawing, dancing, using the human voice or a musical instrument to express oneself artistically. Rud encompasses all these options in its various courses.

Rud upper secondary school is responsible for the education at Ila secure prison facility.
In Valmiera Latvia, our partners are Pargajya Gymnas, Pansionates Valmieras where we have an exchange programme (Leonardo da Vinci) and Dauguli school for children with special needs.
Rud is also involved with a school development project in the Comenius 1 programme, called All Aboard. This project involving 5 schools from 5 countries in Europe in the field of children with special needs.
In Zambia, Rud upper secondary school has a friendship school in Luapula district; St. Paul school of nursing.
In Germany Rud has an exchange programme for vocational training students with Kreishandwerkershaft Waldech-Frankenberg.
